While AIDS Niagara's programs attempt to help address the myriad of challenges that living with HIV/AIDS may bring to one's life, sometimes there is no substitute for the support and companionship of one's peers . Peer support addresses this need through monthly meetings and occasional informal social gatherings.
Support group meetings are an opportunity for clients to get together and share their experiences, concerns and joys in a friendly, safe, supportive and non-judgemental setting. Groups are facilitated by a trained volunteer but the content and structure of the meetings are determined by the group members.
Sometimes a guest speaker is invited to attend to present or discuss a topic of interest to the group. Past speakers have addresses issues such as:
- legal issues (e.g. wills, powers-of-attorney and estate law)
- financial and insurance matters
- accessing the health-care system
- dealing with government agencies & bureaucracy
- alternative health-care and therapies
We have both a men's support group and a women's support group. The men's group meets monthly on the last Wednesday of the month. The women's group meets bi-weekly.
