 Newcomer Support

Newcomer Support Services is responsible for community development for the expansion and delivery of support services with a focus on African, migrant workers, and first and second generation newcomers in the Niagara Region.

In the past three years, the Niagara Region has witnessed major changes and increases in diverse population growth, which led to the need for a Newcomer Support Coordinator funded by Ministry of Health & Long Term Care in 2006. It was recognized that cultural sensitivity being applied to education and support, was paramount and crucial to the newly expanded delivery of services.

The Niagara region has four border crossings through which people from many foreign countries enter each day, either as refugees, immigrants, exchange students or visitors. The main purpose of the Newcomer Support Program is to incorporate cultural awareness to HIV/AIDS education and support. The program also endeavours to assist those at risk, those with high needs, and those who require additional help in adjusting to the many barriers encountered. This is delivered with great respect and awareness of the different cultural beliefs and practices.

The Newcomer Support Coordinator liaises with the African and newcomer communities to develop and secure partnerships. The program is centrally located in St Catharines with ongoing liaisons with the Folk Arts Council of St. Catharines.
